Once a company begins to grow and become successful enough in its operations to have a future, the business owners start thinking about developing a plan for who will succeed them and be at the helm of affairs in the company.
In a private company (whether Big or Small scale),dealing with this succession issue is very crucial as the business owner has the responsibility to think beyond him/herself and provide a succession structure that might involve consideration of Employees and Family members.
However ,there are some employees within an organization who BELIEVE that they are HEIR APPARENT and are ENTITLED to succeed current owners.
They have HEIR APPARENT MENTALITY.
They believe they MUST occupy that position because;
1.They have spent donkey years in the company and know the company history and operations like the back of their hands .
2.They have undergone several training ,sponsored by the company ,to prepare them for the position. This is usually after being promised the position by the company.
3.They are extremely good on the job.
But are the reasons above sufficient enough to disable a company from appointing a Heir to MAN its operations for reasons best known to them.
Many employees become very angry if they are denied the position eventually.Some even resign outrightly because they feel cheated.
In one of the interviews he granted after retiring from Nestle(Nigeria) where he rendered 41 years of Meritorious Service,Chief Olusegun Osunkeye counselled against behaving as the Heir Apparent and advocates patience ,loyalty and dedication to the job.
